NFD refers to the total value of debt Australia owes to the rest of the world less the amount of debt owed to Australia by the rest of the world, whereas NFE refers to the total value of [non-debt] Australian (e.g. shares) owned by foreigners less the total of foreign assets owned by Australians. A key difference between these two types of net liabilities is that NFD is serviced via payments/receipts through the Net Income (NPI) section of the current account whereas NFE is serviced via payments/receipts such as and rents.
